Just in case anyone else reads this thread I seem to have found a solution to
the problem. The file that was causing the sync problem (even though I had
never tried to move the file from the laptop to the Pocket PC) was a PDF file
so after a lot of false starts and attempts to diagnose the problem I deleted
acrobat reader for Pocket PC from both my PDA and laptop and then
re-installed from the Adobe web page. This solved the problem, but I went a
bit further. I tried to move the PDF file to the Pocket PC that had caused
the glitch and the conversion failed and 'froze' the ActiveSync window. I
tried moving other PDF files to the Pocket PC and that worked.
I think the 'problem' PDF file causes problems because it was generated by
my Epsom printer when scanning a document. It was not doing character
recognition but presumably embedding a .jpg (or similar) in a PDF format.
Anyway, I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
For the record I'm running Acrobat Reader 8 on the laptop.
