Push synch problems, not synching or duplicating Eric Baines 06-12-2007

I've got terrible problesm with synching, and I hope someone can help.

We have used smartphones for years, synching over air with our exchange
server. We have been using push email since it came out, and have loads of
smartphones working fine with it.

At the end of last week, my phone (HTC MTeor) started behaving strangely
when synching. Firstly, it would show itself synching (eg email 0/5). It
would then cycle round the different outlook elements (email, calendar,
contacts etc) three or four times (eg email 0/1). In doing this it brought
the new emails etc over.

But if you synched again, it would do excatly the same thing again, with the
same numbers.

I thought it had got tied up somehow, so I removed the tick box for
calendar/contacts and then resynched, and then I put the ticks back and
resynched. I was horrified to find I had three copies of everything in my
calendar and contacts on my PC - but strangely only one on my phone.

I went though the calendar and contacts on my PC and deleted 2 of the three
and then resynched, most but not all of the items then disappeared off my
phone! I should have 100+ contacts - my phone shows 3.

I've tried another MTeor and I've also tried the reliable old Imate SP5.
These give just the same results, so I think it must be something to do with
my account on exchange, not the phone.

I went to my computer system manager and asked about the problem. In trying
to fix it, he has now triplicated his calendar and contacts too, and his
items are not synching.

Any ideas what we have done and how to fix it?

Cheers

Eric

It seems that some of the synhroniation indees kept in your device have got
corrupted.

What I would suggest is to erase the E

Thanks for the reply - I think we have found the answer. On Friday, we
upgraded to Trend Scanmail version 8, providing our exchange virus scanning.
It seems as though this is preventing access to the synchronization indices.
Turn it off and the problem goes away.

Apparently there is a tool they provide, if you ask for it. None of this is
on their web site - just a very helpful blog. Thanks, Trend!

Cheers

Hi,

I have the exact same problem. I have contacted Trend to get the patch, but
they can't find it. They are asking me for the solution id. Can you give me
the solution id or the name of the patch?

Regards,
Fredrik

Fredrik,

This is the response we got:-

According to the problem symptom, it should be the defect in SMEX VSAPI
module.
It's due to " VirusScanProactiveScanning" key under each
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\<ServerName>\Private-<Per
DB GUID>\" is not removed when upgrade from 7.0 to 8.0, and causes proactive
scan to turn off. (SMEX 8.0 does not use this key)
Workaround:
===========
1.Remove "VirusScanProactiveScanning" under each
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\<Server
Name>\Private-<Per DB GUID>\" ..
2. Restart SMEX_Master service.
3. (Optional) Perform a manual scan when mail traffic is low.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Users who encounter the same issue and don't want to use its workaround to
correct it manually should use the attached
toolCorrectProactiveScanSetting.exe to fix this issue:
ToolCorrectProactiveScanSetting.exe
===================================
This tool is to fix this issue, all tasks it does are the same as the
workaround provided already.
[What it does]
It will remove all unused "VirusScanProactiveScanning" keys and wait for
Exchange VSAPI reloads new setting.
[How to use]
1. Copy toolCorrectProactiveScanSetting.exe to SMEX 8.0 install folder 2.
Execute toolCorrectProactiveScanSetting.exe
3. Remove toolCorrectProactiveScanSetting.exe
In the event that the proposed solution fails to resolve the issue, manually
debug SMEX and send us the following logs together SMEX server registry keys
for further analysis
Collect MsiExec. log
Collect SMEX_Master log
Collect SMEX _Remoteconfig.log
Collect SMEX _System Watcher.log
Collect SMEX_SetupHelper.log
Collect SMEX_ MsiSetup .log
Collect SMEX_MsiInstal-SMEX.log
