When XP (Media Center Ed.) starts after overnight off, everything appears
normal - all desktop icons appear, start menu items, task bar, etc., all look
normal. Even Internet contact is made for Yahoo Widgets to update. However,
when I click on a program icon to open it, it will not open. Even the browser
programs won't open yet connection is there. When I shut down and re-start
(may have to do more than once), things will start working again. Yes,
running anti-virus, anti-malware prgs and have done the scans - which show no
problems. Hope someone has some ideas about this strange problem,
Thanks

Are you using a wired or wireless connection?
If using a broadband router is it always connected to your ISP?
When you shutdown your computer at night do you shut it down using the start
menu?

Internet connection to problem computer is wired - always on cable modem
broadband - connection to notebook (presently using) is WiFi via router.
Yes, I use Start Menu shutdown. Would now add that I can start in Safemode
and have access to all programs - they open & run normally - but still have
occasional problem as described earlier in "normal" mode.

Is your computer wired connection to the router which in turn is connected
your cable modem?
Does your router have a "keep alive" setting if yes what time period is it
set to?

I may (say may because will have to go thru some more off/on cycles - but so
far so good) have "solved" the problem. Had updated to newer ver. 8.0 free
AVG but also had on free version of Threatfire. Previously only Threatfire
had real time monitoring but new AVG also has real time monitoring. Both
cannot co-exist with real time monitoring (at least on my computer) it seems.
I uninstalled Threatfire and have not had the problem since. They must've
conflicted when starting up and initiating?? Hopefully, this was and is the
solution and problem is gone for good. Will re-post if it comes back. I'll
try running this through Threatfire website and see what they may say. May
be pure, dumb luck is at work.
Thanks JW for your replies.
