Product key question Tom Brown 05-11-2008

A friend of mine has a Dell laptop with some problems and he has asked me to
reinstall his O/S. He does not have the original install CDs (doesn't think
he ever had them) but we have another friend who has a 2 disk XP/MCE set. I
tried to do a fresh install using the Product Key on the bottom of the
computer. But, it tells me that the Key is invalid. I have used this
method in the past on XP (borrowed install disks, legal Product Key for this
computer from the MS sticker on the computer itself).

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Did you try the factory supplied recovery partition? Use that to put the
machine back to its out of box state.

Thanks Doug. I didn't try that and I am not sure how to access it. But, I'll
fiddle around with it and try to find the trick.

Yep, I got it. Ctrl-F11 during boot up. But, it seemed to reinstall ok but
during the subsequent setup (time zones, internet connection, users, etc).
it seems to be hung up on the page where I put the one user name. I can't
get it to move past that page.
