I am having a problem with XP MCE 2005 and a Motorola DCT-700 set top
box, on Comcast. Watching Live TV works absolutely fine - the channels
change reliably in all cases.
However my PC regularly fails to change to the correct channel when
making a scheduled recording. I can see from the start of the recording
that the first digit of the channel number is missed, hence the channel
doesn't change.
I've seen numerous postings of similar issues, but I wanted to find
out:
a) whether there is a general Microsoft fix for this
b) whether there are any specific recommendations for my set top box.
Many thanks,
David

Please log in for more thread options Oops. Wrong button. I had this problem before getting a Moxi unit. Are you
using the infrared device? If so, try changing the location of the stick-on
sender slightly.

Please log in for more thread options Here is a repost of the same problem I had and sometimes still do.
The fix was posted by Steve #7

MCE 2005 and Bell ExpressVu 3100 satellite receiver.
For the last couple of weeks when I set up my timer to record a program.
I keep getting the wrong channel recording. What seems to happen is the
first number of the channel does not register with the satellite
receiver. I went threw the setup again and it changes channels no
problem. Set it to fast, med and slow and all works great. Just when I
program the timer to record it fails to record the right channel.
Example: Wed. at 7pm. On channel 202. The first "2" does not get sent to
the receiver but the "0" and the last "2" does. Since there is no channel
"02" it ends up recording channel 48.
On the 3100 there are three IR ports in a row on the front. I believe one
is for receiving an IR signal and the other two send an IR signal.
Example: to change the channel on a VCR.
Question: Where should the tear drop sending unit be in front of? I have
it on the middle one.

Hi!
I'm having exactly the same problem with my Bell ExpressVU 4700 reciever.
See my post of Feb 23, 2005 titled, "MCE2005 Timer changing wrong
channel...
any tips".
I am also stuck and have no clue what is going on. I'm getting annoyed
recording the VU previews all the time! lol
I don't think it is a problem with the Bell ExpressVu recievers since the
Dish Network uses the exact same ones.
I'm convinced it's the media center software. I am sure that when
changing
a channel through a timer, the MCE2005 sends the signal to the IR
reciever
too fast and it misses the first digit.
You mentioned that this problem started a couple of weeks ago. Does it
mean
it was working perfectly before?
By any chance, did you get any Microsoft updates or install any new
software in the past few weeks?
I would like to hear back from you. You can also email me at
msama...@canac.com.
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. I have my IR bug positioned sideways about 1/2 an inch above the
IR
lights on my Bell ExpressVu unit. Maybe I got it wrong!

"I'm convinced it's the media center software. I am sure that when

Mine works fine when controlling my DirecTV Series 10 satellite receiver.
It's not sending it too fast.
I don't think there's any code in MCE that encourages favortism amongst
tuners. I'd start by making sure you answer the "what are the maximum
number of digits in your channels?" question. Then, I'd look at the
answer
to the "does your remote require that you press any keys after entering a
channel?" question. I had some problems with mine before I got those
answers correct. It took me a few times to get it, though.

Thanks Michael,
But... I have already checked all that... I have it set to 3 digits and
my
reciever does not require me to hit the OK/Enter button on the remote.
These
settings are correctly set.
I did not say that there was favoritism between Digital set-top
recievers...
I think you missunderstood the point. The reason I and the other preson
in
this thread brought up the set-top reciever type was to enquire about the
favorable place to position the IR Bug on the unit. The angle and
distance
from the sensor is important.
I do believe that there is a problem with the MCE 2005 software sending
the
signal too fast to the IR Reciever (not the digital set top reciever...
the
one that plugs into the machines USB port) when using a scheduled timer.
Everything works okay if I'm changing a channel while viewing Live TV
(via
the MCE remote control or the program guide for currently showing
programs).
The problem only occurs when the MCE 2005 is attempting to change the
channel through a scheduled timer. Instead of "205", "05" shows up.
Likewise "218" will show up as "18". Since there is no "05" and "18",
our
Bell ExpressVU recievers default to the VU preview channel (channel 48)
which
is the first available one.
I hope that this clarifies the problem many of us are having.
Thanks for the response,
Mike

I see. I haven't had any difficulties with it when it changes the
channel
for a scheduled recording.
I wish I could be more help.

I have had the exact same problem with both the 5100 and 5700 receivers.
The only solution was to set the speed for the remote signals to "SLOW"
There is a spot in the wizard where it asks you to hit channel up/down
several times in a row, then asks you if the channels changed correctly.
Reply No.
The first time you reply No, it will set the speed to Medium. Then do the
test again and reply No one more time. Now the speed will be set to Slow.
Once I did this my channel changes and scheduled recordings are correct
everytime.

I have the exact same problem, and posted a note to thegreenbutton.com:
http://www.thegreenbutton.com/community/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=50&Me...
THE SOLUTION!!! is at:
http://mediacenter.mattgoyer.com/2004/12/14.html
Basically a registry edit to prolong the duration of each remote virtual
keypress.
I have a 3100. The IR receiver eye on that model is the MIDDLE lens you
see.
I set the Key Interval to 175
Key Duration to 450
Channel interval to 450
Which basically says keep the key pressed for 0.45 sescs and wait about
half
a sec between channel changes.
Since this fix, there have been ZERO errors pressing the OK button to
swap
channels, recording, or initiating live TV. Admittedly this is only a
day or
so, but it was a problem everytime before.

Thanks Steve,
I tried it last night before I saw your message. I found the link to
that
same webpage on another board. So far so good... it seems like it's
working.
Let's hope it still works after a week or so. That guy, Matt Goyer,
will be
making many friends in the Media Center community!
I only changed the key interval from 250 to 300 and it worked. If I find
that it still occasionally does screw up, I will try your suggested
values.
Question1: What made you set it to 175 and 450? Am I setting the key
interval too high and the key duration to low? I figure that you must
have
played with it more than I.
Question2: I know that you are placing the bug above the middle light,
but.... What angle are you placing the IR bug? Vertical, horizontal, or
with
a tilt?
I hope that the regestry fix is not masking a real problem that Microsoft
is
having; however, if it is the problem, they should consider gving the
user
more options on the IR configuration other than Fast, Medium, and Slow.
And
advanced configuration that lets you play with the interval times would
be
nice. If not, and Extra-Slow option would be good.
Thanks again!!!
Mike
Hi all,
I also tried the reg fix and my system seems to be working now. I have
some heavy recording coming up this weekend and we will see if it 100%
fixed.
Thanks again for the info!

I'm back to square one!!!!
The fix may have helped a little; however, I'm still getting the wrong
channels.
I will play with it some more.
