In no matter what sequence I start/plug USB devices, I experience
screen freezups, some of which require rebooting. I had the same
problem with an Adaptec unit. I am plugging simple thumb drives and
a digital camera, so I think it's not a power drain problem. The
problem occurs when I try to access the stills/videos.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 2650 with USB 1.1 ports, BTW.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Frank

The Dynex DX-UC202 USB 2 card that I have came with a power jumper to
plug into an on-board USB 1.1 port to supply power additional to that
available on the PC-Card slot. When using the card with an older
notebook, the instantaneous power draw on the PC-Card slot would cause
similar freezing unless I used the jumper.

Thanks. It is great to find someone with the same card that I have!
I was using the jumper to the USB 1.1 port. The literature
suggested that even that might not be enough for some devices, but
the ones I am using (thumb drives alone, for example) should certainly
not belong in that category. I am reluctant to try an external
transformer just yet.
I had an Adaptec unit home before I replaced it with the Dynek.
That one did not require an external connection to the USB 1.1 port,
but did not recover well from hibernations and could not hot-swap.
I may have to go back to that one or try still another brand.
I'll keep you posted.
Any other ideas?
Frank

Unfortunately, the Dynex card has functioned properly on every WinXP
laptop that I've tried and the only problem was using the power jumper.
I'm wondering if the problem you have is an artifact of the PC-Card slot
driver. Who is the vendor for the PC-Card slot shown in Device Manager?

I'm experiencing the same problem as yours, Frank. I have a HP
Pavilion running WinXP. My computer would freeze when I plugged my
thumb drive in. The device manager shows NEC as the vendor.
