I made a backup of my Wm2003 (german language) device using ActiveSync. For
some stupid reason I lost all my data. Now I'm trying to use a backup file I
created two weeks ago.

ActiveSync is able to restore files, folders and notes, but when it tries to
backup databases (appointments and contacts) it says that the applications
are in use. I checked and they are not (as far as I can see).

What can I do? Tools like HPCVault did not help either.

Did you hard reset immediately before trying the restore?

Sure!
I did the hard reset, connected the device with the computer and after AS
had completed I did the restore. I even deactivated the display of the
calendar in the today screen because I thought it might have help but it
didn't

In that case I'm sorry I don't know how to fix it.

Thank you for asking though.
I have seen this problem on many forums and sites all over the internet. It
seems to be a known issue that AS sometimes has problems restoring databases.

Does anyone know how to close thos applications in a way that allows AS to
restore the data? or does anyone maybe know of a tool that extracts contacts
and appointments from a backup file into a csv, text or wathever other file?
