Hi,

I have been dual-booting Windows XP and Linux for the period of several
months. However, when attempting to reinstall Windows, I've ran into the
following problems:

1. During the installation process, prior to the GUI installer part, it
takes several hours to copy installation files over to the hard drive. From
previous times installing Windows with the same hardware configuration, I
know that this step takes ten minutes at most.

2. The GUI installer forecasts an installation time of 30-35 minutes; the
installation takes over three hours. Again, previous installs were completed
within the forecasted time.

3. When the installation is over, after more than four hours, Windows takes
around half an hour to boot, and shows a blank desktop instead of the user
selection screen.

No errors are present during or after the installation. This behavior only
became present when I tried to reinstall Windows with Linux partitions
existing on the same hard drive. I have assumed that this was the root of the
problem, and hence, decided to try installing Windows on the entire hard
drive, overwriting all the Linux partitions and formatting them as NTFS (not
the quick format option). Unfortunately, the same problems listed above were
present during the installation and after.

My hardware configuration is as follows:
AMD Athlon 3200+
Asus A7N8X-8 Deluxe
1024 MB RAM
WD 160Gb SATA Hard drive
Silicon Image Sil 3112A RAID Controller
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

Due to the fact that Windows XP does not recognize the SATA controller, I
have to select the option to use 3rd party drivers during the Windows XP
install. The drivers I am using are the ones that came on the CD included
with the motherboard.

I have to exclude hard drive failure as one of the possible causes, because
Linux runs on the system with no errors.

If anyone has any clue as to what is causing these problems, I would greatly
appreciate the info.

---
P.S. I was attempting to use the official Microsoft support options, such as
live chat or help via email, however the website asks me for the product
identification number. Alas, I cannot obtain this number, because Windows XP
is not installed at the moment. If someone, perhaps a Microsoft
representative, could reply to me as to how I can get around this paradox, I
would be most grateful.

I've seen Windows installs take that long on the first step - something
having to do with not having a cache set up for the CD. I'm not aware of
this happening with XP.

I bet the Windows ID number they're talking about is the long number/letter
sequence you enter when you're installing - it should be on a sticker either
on the CD case or accompanying paperwork.

You might want to ask this in one of the XP forums - we support Media Center
PCs here.
