Via USB, I enabled and checked the connection settings several times to
verify that tey were set to connect via usb.

I don't claim to be an ActiveSync expert. But, there are people over in the
microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync newsgroup that are and may have some
advice to offer. I also grabbed bits and pieces of ActiveSync
troubleshooting info and placed them on a single web page at:
