I cannot install activesync software from the installation cd or from the
web. I can install the software on another computer so I suspect it is an OS
problem. I disabled all the TSRs and I still could not install the software.
I see the files being copied from the cd to some folder in the windows
directory I guess. I went into the programs director and deleted the
subfolder activesync but the program still would not install. I have no clue
what registry keys to delete.

Any ideas

Mitch Kastner

Are you seeing any error messages? Or is the install just not
launching? If it's the latter, take a look at

for one solution.

You should give details if you want help- they may help.
Does your activesync have a version number? And what is your unnamed
'problem' OS?

You shouldn't really delete a directory directly, you should use the
uninstall routines provided. Direct deletion can leave files and registry
entries that are still registered that the OS expects to be there and
compound any problems you have. If you *have* to consider manual deletion
you should check for all links to any files in that directory. However any
issues are more likely to be related to system files placed directly into
the Windows and/or System directory/ies- you deletion won't affect these
system files as you aren't removing those files.

Did you disable your firewall? They can interfere with installs and
generally MS do tell you to disable them when installing programs. And some
anti-virus programs can interfere with installs- disable them while
installing too.

After an install attempt there can be left over entries in the registry.
Remove them- search for terms related to the entries you wish to remove,
'activesync' would be one worth searching for.

READ the install instructions, follow the install instructions exactly when
you have cleaned things, don't connect the machine until told- connecting
too early can give the problem you had (- it did to me and I had to clean
the registry and connect the machine at the right time for it to work for
me).
Don't just accept dialogs without reading what they are telling you- doing
things at the wrong time can cause problems. Are there read me files on your
install cd? Did you read them?

Is your unnamed OS Windows XP? It has the option of restore points that can
be useful. You should make sure one is created before an install for your
own benefit- but do remember it does not always fully restore prior to an
install- but it is more than having no restore point.

You can always try installing in safe mode too.
