Previewing image files and not the text? Jerry 05-24-2005

I have a document storage system that uses TIF
format and the documents are OCR'd. The files get
correctly indexed, but the preview shows text
rather than the image.

Is there a way to preview the image and not the text?

Jerry,

Our current preview technology is built around IE and is therefore limited
to teh rendering capabilities of IE. IE doesn't support the rendering of
TIF's which is why
we don't have TIF's mapped to using the rich image previews.

You could use the "native previewer" mapping technique i talked about
elsewhere in this forum to map TIF previews to use IE's file hosting
technology directly but what happens on my system is the TIF get's launched
by IE into a seperate window which probably won't be a great experience
either. Maybe someone on this forum knows of a 3rd party TIF viewer that
supports direct hosting of TIF's within IE... If so that would be your best
bet because you could install that app and map TIF previews to use the native
previewer which would cause IE to load the 3rd party viewer in place.

Hi Jerry, Steve - Possibly http://www.alternatiff.com/ would do the trick as
a 3rd party viewer for TIFF's within IE. It is freeware and I have found it
very good, but I've not yet tried it out with Steve's "native previewer"
technique. - Regards, Mike.

Great! Thanks to both for your kind help.

I have installed the Alternatiff viewer (as ActiveX for IE) and then created
a .tif key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RSSearch\
ContentIndexCommon\Previewers\Extension\.

Then I set the (Default) value under that key to the code I found in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\\TypeLib
belonging to Alternatiff.

However, now I get "Preview not available" in the preview window.
What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, just discovered I had to enter
015CA7C6-DECD-40dc-AAAC-73EA9940E0F9 for
the "native previewer". Now it works (btw no need to restart
the PC), but I get a security warning in the
Information Bar about ActiveX being a safety hazard.
Have to click twice before seeing the picture.
