What helped me was, as mentioned, turn off the advanced network
settings (on mobile > Settings > the connections tab > USB to PC >
uncheck "Enable advanced network settings". Then remove the
partnership from the PC, create a new partnership so you will start
from scratch, done.

I have just done this but I have synchronised a few times (while
making intermediate changes) and so far it seems to hold up.
