I'm hoping one of the vets or MVPs here might have an idea for me.

I got ahold of a beta version of WM5 and from it installed ActiveSync
4.0, mistakenly thinking there might be some new feature or advantage.
Obviously there isn't so I uninstalled it and reinstalled AS 3.8 from
the MS download site.

The problem is, now AS 3.8 doesn't work. When I plug in my SmartPhone
(an MPX220 connected via USB cable), the connection indicator sound
plays, and the tray icon indicates a status of "Connecting" changing
to connected, but I cannot open/restore the ActiveSync main screen.
Tried clicking on the tray icon, or using the Restore option on the
context menu - nothing happens(except a brief busy indicator on the
cursor). Also there is NO synchro happening.

Also, if Outlook is open while I am connected, it doesn't exit
properly, leaving a tray icon and a copy active in memory, but
inaccessible.

When I go to Windows XP Explorer and try to browse the Mobile Device,
I get an error message as follows:

Critical Communications Services have failed to start. Try resetting
the mobile device and then connect again. When I click OK and try to
navigate away from the Mobile Device, Explorer hangs and must be
killed and restarted manually to regain control.

System is Win XP Home SP2, 3.4 Gig Pentium 4, 2 Gig RAM close to 1.4
of which is free. PLENTY O Disk space on SATA HDD.

I'm going nuts trying to track this down - have uninstalled and
reinstalled twice, tried cleaning out any stray reg entries post
uninstall (couldn't find any) but everything's the same. I HAVEN'T
tried reinstalling AS 4.0, but quite frankly I'm afraid to!

Any ideas, help, encouragement <G> would be gratefully appreciated! I
live by my Outlook/SmartPhone Calendar and this is going to be a
serious inconvenience if I can't get it going soon!

Thanks for reading, and more thanks if you can help
