While looking for help on Motorola Q serial-port issues, I stumbled
into this GPS Users forum, which talks about an update to the Q's
firmware that relates to the serial port.
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59056 (see post
from Greymane21, dated 12/8/2006).
Any chance this update will also fix my problem pairing the fabric
keyboard?

p.s. I'm throwing this out there, because, even with all of the
official tech support I've contacted, Bill Suckow has provided the
clearest explanation of my pairing problem.
