i know, I'm the fool of the year and should have known better.

i tried installing software on my company laptop and a virus message
and scanner came up detecting a virus, said it was handled, and then
said that my system administrator would be contacted.

i wasn't connected to the network or internet at the time and have yet
to connect.

is there any way i can avoid gettng my head handed to me on this one??

anything anyone can do to help is appreciated in advance.

You don't say what software you tried to install nor what the virus
was, by assuming this or that we could all end up going round in
circles.

You said you wasn't connected to the Network or Internet at the time
so where did the virus come from... apart from the software, was this
software that someone copied for you, one that you downloaded and
saved to disc or one that has been purchased.

Viruses can lurk undetected on the computer for ages and only
activated under certain commands or certain dates, some are memory
resident.

All that we know is that you installed the software and up popped a
virus... so are we right in saying the software is to blame..?

yes the software was to blame for the virus and was given to me by a
friend. probably
something he just downloaded off the web. as soon as i clicked the zip
file i got a virus message.
i am on a brand new hp company issued laptop running windows xp. not
sure what security program
the company uses but there's a program called office scan in my program
files. i connect to the network using cisco vpn. theres another progam
file called RSA security.

sorry for not providing more info, i'm obviously clueless about this
stuff, which is why i shjouldnt have tried to install any software on
this thing inthe first place.

thanks for replying.

Click on your virus scanning icon that should be running in your lower right
corner and complete a scan of your computer and if possible have the
software delete it. Other folks probably have better ideas than mine, but
this is what I'd do (fortunately I have never had this problem).

This isn't brain surgery.
Put yourself in your employer's position.
Which would you rather have:
1)An employee protecting your network by taking it to the IT department
for fixup PRIOR to connecting to the network?
or
2)An employee covering his tracks and infecting your network with
who-knows-what?
Corporations have policies against employees messing with their
computers for a reason.

And if the laptop says it's gonna contact the system adminsitrator,
it probably will next time you connect to the network.
You wanna wait for them to come to you?

Are we having fun yet?
