Hello,

I have a legacy computer that has a non-Cardbus PCMCIA type II slot on
it. I am looking for (if it exists) a PCMCIA card type I or II which
has at least one USB port on it.

If this does not exist, is there such a device that converts a 9-pin
RS232 serial to USB 1.1 (low speed only). I am interested in serial
communications to a device that has a USB interface. This is from a
win95 or windows 98 laptop.

Thanks

I don't remember the exact details, but it's been reported that PCMCIA
lacks some support features that are reqiured by USB.
USB and Cardbus support arrived at about the same time.
My personal experience with old laptops has been that if it doesn't
have USB, it likely doesn't have Cardbus either and I'm outa luck.

... and just to twist the knife that bit further, it is not possible to
adapt RS-232 to USB for much the same reason.

I kind of figured as much that this device does not exist. I was able
to resolve
my problem anyways. The USB device in question has a RS232 to TTL
converter
daughter board available.

USB and Cardbus are not really tied together, they did appear at ABOUT
the same time, but a Cardbus port is effectively a PCI motherboard slot
and a 16-bit PC Card slot is effectively an ISA slot. For a number of
reasons, a USB hub port must exist on the PCI bus, and can't exist on an
ISA bus. This would be true on a desktop as well, so you can't have USB
PC Card that is non-cardbus.
