if a laptop uses PC2700 DDR 333Mhz SODIMM, can I put in PC 4200 DDR2 533

No, but the reason is that DDR and DDR2 are totally different types of
memory. You normally can use a faster grade of the same type of memory,
but in this case you are trying to switch types as well as speed, and
that won't work.
