PC doesn't recognize my CD and DVD drives... Czarina 03-20-2006

I don't know exactly when it happened, but this morning I inserted a CD into
both drives and neither of them worked, and they don't appear when I click on
"my computer". In the Device Manager, both have a yellow circle with an
exclamation mark. (they are LITE-ON DVD SOHD-16P9S and TSSTcorp CD/DVDW
TS-H552B) Device status both say that "Windows cannot load the device driver
for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" And the
Troubleshooter lead me nowhere. Uninstalling and reinstalling the devices did
not help, and it couldn't find any updates to try and fix it.

They worked fine after I booted the system recovery disk and installed all
the downloads from gateway two months ago, because I have a Media Center
Edition 2005 Gateway GT5014. I know I installed all the downloads, even
double-cheked by attempting to reinstall... Do I have to reinstall
everything again?

In device manager, try uninstalling the IDE controller that these devices
are connected to and then reboot.

You didn't by any chance play a Sony BMG music CD that included the
copy-protection DRM rootkit software, did you? For a full list of those CDs,
visit http://www.sonybmgcdtechsettlement.com/CDList.htm

If you did, you'll need to talk to Sony about removing it. More info at
www.FairUseLaw.com.
