--Desperate for a new laptop; looking for something with a 15"
screen and XP; preferably rugged enough to survive being knocked repeatedly
on the floor (lotsa doggies!). Nothing at Best Buy; Comp USA's gone belly
up, etc. and scrabbling around for possibilities. Found a PC Club store in
my town but am unsure of the quality of their offerings. Comments?

buy yourself a cheap laptop that you leave in the cabinet and a desktop
bolted to the table. Cheaper initially than a notebook with the specs
to survive repeated knocking on the floor. Or buy an industrial grade
laptop like a toughbook.

--Not practical; can't afford the Toughbook but I like it! :-)

You sound like a hobby friend of mine,
"That's a 5V part, I've got a 3V power supply...I'll take two."
"Hey, Mike, why doesn't my circuit work?"

If you need something that can be knocked on the floor, wishing ain't
gonna make it so. You're gonna have to raise your budget or lower
your survival expectations. There ain't no free lunch. Sometimes
you can buy a warranty that covers mishandling.

If you let your dogs destroy your property, you've already set your
priorities the way you want 'em. Now, all you gotta do is live with it.

I have a friend who's son goes thru a PC Club notebook every few months.
But he seems to break everything he touches, so that's not a particular
indictment of PC Club. Just a data point that they're no more rugged
than anyone else.

My choice for an abusive environment would be a dirt-cheap used laptop
off craigslist or a garage sale. I'm much less concerned about the
safety of a $20 laptop.

--Yeah well I'm leaning towards a Toughbook right now. Money isn't
as high a priority as survivability and OS compatibility for my other apps
(and I've got *lots* of stuff crammed on the old one). Anyone got experience
with the Toughbook?
