Outlook 2k, H\PC 2k & WM5 sync?
-----------------------------------
I have Outlook 2000 and a HP Jornada 720 running H\PC 2000. I sync it with
Active Sync 3.8.0 (build 5004). I sync all contacts, all tasks and all
appointments.

I also have a PPC-6700. I would like to sync it to Outlook. However, there
is no version of Active Sync that supports both H\PC 2000 and WM5. To make
matters worse, there is no version that supports WM5 and Outlook 2000. If I
upgrade to Outlook 2003, then there is no version that supports Outlook
2003 and H\PC 2000 for my Jornada.

Any ideas? I would like to keep them all sync'd. I do have a laptop. If
there is no way to directly sync them, then is there something I can do
with one on the laptop and one on the desktop?

I would prefer not to get a 2nd PC (laptop) involved as it is more
complication but I figured I would mention it as it is unlikely to find a
straight forward Active Sync solution.

Additionally, how about 3rd party sync stuff? Will that solve this?

Hi,

Wouldnt be able to comment since don't have a Jornada 720 to test myself but
yes from what I have read earlier, it might not work with the ActiveSync
4.5. Some users have had success with 4.2 version but am not sure if they
were upgrading from 3.x version or it was a fresh installation. Here is a
good piece of history -
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesyncversions.htm about the different
versions and what it supports. You can try and if it doesn't work, downgrade
to 3.8 version.

Third party sync applications usually piggy back on the ActiveSync
connection so I doubt if that would help.

Raj,

I had already looked at the FAQ at:
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesyncversions.htm
before I posted. That is why I explained,

"there is no version of Active Sync that supports both H\PC 2000 and WM5.
To make matters worse, there is no version that supports WM5 and Outlook
2000. If I upgrade to Outlook 2003, then there is no version that
supports Outlook 2003 and H\PC 2000 for my Jornada."

According to the FAQ:

The LATEST Active Sync that supports the Jornada, running H\PC 2000, is
3.8.

The MINIMUM Active Sync that supports Windows Mobile 5.0 build
14847.2.0.0, is 4.1

I now see that both 3.8 and 4.1 support Outlook 2000 but I cannot run 2
versions of Active Sync on one machine (at least not to my knowledge).

Your comment that the 3rd party software rides on Active Sync is
something that I did not know. That is troubling because that means the
root of the problem still remains with Active Sync which is in
Microsoft's hands, not likely good news for the end user!

Regards,

Jim

Hi,

What I meant was although ActiveSync 4.2 doesn't officially support Jornada
some users had success with that version. So you could try that version.

Hi,
There is no work around to support what you want. The clsoest you can get
is to use Virtual PC and another version of XP to sync via serial with the
720 and AS 3.8 and use the regular PC and OS to sync with WM5.
