I assume you are synching your contacts with a PC/server?
I'd go to Activesync on the the phone. Select Menu, Options, Server
Settings, Contacts and untick 'Sync Contacts with a server'. If you done all
the way out and then go back and re-tick it, the phone will delete all the
old contacts so you can re-synch.
