Hello everyone,
I'm currently studying the pros and cons of both systems. Our goal is
to store goegraphic data (non geodetic : 3D data in a cartesian
projection) and use it with several GIS commercial products (Autodesk
Mapguide and Map, ESRI SDE and ArcGIS, MapInfo).
Currently we have in our company two sets of database servers :
Informix and Oracle. Informix, due to historical reason, has a leading
position in the company with serveral databases running, while we only
have two Oracle database, one of them being the GIS database (Oracle 9i
SDO). This is working fine.
Our IT staff wants to get rid of Oracle to focus on only one database
system to have a simpler management. I can understand that quite well.
My concern is :
- It is very easy to find application capable of reading and writing
data directly to Oracle Spatial, while Informix Spatial datablade seems
to be more "exotic".
- As far as I can see (on
http://www.opengeospatial.org/resources/?page=products ) Informix is
not fully OGC compliant. Perhaps this is not a real pain, but the
future it can be interesting to have the ability to change our client
GIS application or at least some flexibility...
- About performances, ease of use, backups, can anyone tried the two
systems and give some hints ?
- Informix has been bought by IBM. I've been told that IBM is currently
merging its DB2 with Informix. Does anyone have any information about
that ? Shall I fear some future data migration again if I put my Oracle
data into Informix ?
Thanks for your help. Forgive me for this long post but I don't have a
good knowledge of Informix.
