 Hello. I have a horizontal navigation bar at the top of most of my web
site's pages. For the link that goes to a description of why I am called
"The Bicycling Guitarist," I use the text "TBG." Someone suggested to me
that if I put "About me" for the text instead of "TBG" it would be less
confusing to first time visitors. Any opinions?

Sample page at http://www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/studies/eagles.htm The
nav bar is at the top of the page. The "TBG" button is the first visible
button (after the "skip links" in the html code).

On a related note, what do you think of putting that nav bar at the top of
my site map page at http://www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/sitemap.htm ? I
didn't put it there because I thought it was unnecessary, but somebody else
said they were surprised to visit the site map page and not find the same
nav bar at the top as on all the other pages.

Both of your questions are matters of style,
so there are no right and wrong answers.
However, as you asked, the TLA TBG is NBG.

Done and done. Thank you Martin and Blinky.

One more question about user friendliness: currently I have each link to the
site map go to that section of the site map from which the page links. For
example, the link to the site map from
www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/studies/eagles.htm
opens at the "Studies" section of the site map. The links from my song pages
open at the "R Band" section, etc.
Good idea / Bad Idea?

I don't think it's a horrendously bad idea, but it seems a little odd
to me. When I click on "site Map" link, I usually expect to start at
the top level.
