Obtaining Vector Feature data for a foreign country. Andrew 04-08-2004

I am in the software business, not in GIS. I need to obtain vector
feature data (specifically major roads and waterways) for a foreign
country. I need to use this data in a program called TerraVista
(www.terex.com). It can import many different data types, includeing
ESRI Shapefiles and its own .vec files.

I have searched high and low for the data that I need, and can't seem
to find it. I cannot purchase another software product to get this
data. I downloaded VPF data from NIMA, but I don't have a program to
convert this (including dbf information) to shapefiles. I found a
product that would create shapefiles from vector data online at
www.telemorphic.com, but I don't know what projection this site uses,
and when I try to import this into TerraVista along with accurate DTED
elevation data, it is misaligned.

If anyone knows where I could get a free program to convert VPF to
Shapefiles, or a site with accurate world-wide vector data, or
information on the projection system used at telemorphic, I would
appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Andrew

I had found a way to download VPFView2.1 from another source, but
cannot figure out how to export/convert to shapefiles. I am assuming
this is a part of the NIMAUSE program suite, but I cannot download
anything from the NIMA site. It just gives me an error if it ever
tries to run the register.cgi program, or download an executable from
the download page. Is there another way that I can get a copy of the
convertor? I found a way to use the data from the other web site, but
it isn't 100% accurate, and it doesn't include as many features as the
VPF data. I really need to find a way to use it.

I had seen your site in my origional search, and tried to download
from NIMA several times (it was my first stop) with no luck.

Hi Andrew - sorry but I missed this message earlier, and can't remember if I
have answered it !!! Have you managed to get it sorted ?

The exporter program that you need is called (surprisingly !) VPF Importer
2.1, and is part of the NIMA Muse 2.1 package, not the VPF View. However, as
you say, the download page
http://164.214.2.59/geospatial/SW_TOOLS/NIMAMUSE/dist/NIMAMUSEdist.html does
not seem to be working !!

I do have the package on my computer, but unfortunately have lost the
installer-password. I have just sent an email to NIMA asking for it again,
but am not hopeful that they will send it.

If you have ESRI's ArcView 3.x program, you can use that to export VPF to
shapefiles. This is probably the best way forward for you.

Which country are you working on ? You may be able to obtain the shapefiles
directly from someone, if you say what you need.

Tim in Ireland.
