OK to change CPU with OEM XP MCE 2005?

OK to change CPU with OEM XP MCE 2005? xiowan 05-04-2008

 Hello All:
I have a homebuilt pc with MCE2005 OEM and would like to upgrade the
CPU. I don't want to buy the CPU if an OEM version does not permit the
change. I read in another post that you can change the CPU with Vista OEM
but don't know if a CPU change would invalidate my XP MCE 2005 license. The
current motherboard & bios support the new CPU so I have no hardware problem.
Since originally installing the O.S. I have installed 4 more hard drives and
a second DVD drive. Anyway to find out for sure if a new CPU is ok before
spending the money?

 A new CPU should not invalidate your Windows Product Activation. And if it
does, then all you'll need to do is call the activation number, speak to a
human and tell them you've upgraded the hardware.

Hello Doug Knox:
Thanks for the answer. Have a Vista Ultimate Pc with a Q6600 cpu and
really like it, so I thought I'd upgrade my Pentium D XP Media Center pc to
the same cpu. Hopefully it will work as well with XP as it does with Vista
Ultimate!

I've been through CPU upgrades on MCE 2005 and have had to call for a new
Activation number each time. The other thing to look out for is that Digital
Rights Management is effected by the upgrade and in my experience required
resetting the DRM. Since I didn't have licenses that needed to be saved the
process was painless, if however you need to save your DRM licenses you
might consider doing some research into the DRM aspect before the upgrade.

Hello "Jolt":
Thanks for alerting me to the possible DRM problems! I was hoping I
could just switch the CPU's without an O.S. re-install. About the only thing
that I have that might be affected by DRM would be digital book downloads and
I think I can renew Microsoft Reader purchases even after an O.S. re-install
if it is required.
