Hi guys,

I have an O2 Xphone (also known as Imate Smartphone 2 and Orange SPV-
E200) and recently purchased a Holux GPSlim236 GPS receiver. I'm trying
to get it to work through the TomTom Mobile 5 software but the software
keeps on saying that no GPS receiver is present.

At first, I believed this problem to be the TomTom software's fault, but
now I am beginning to think that it's because the phone and GPS receiver
aren't communicating properly. I'm not really a pro with Bluetooth :)

Anyway, my phone is running Windows Mobile 2003, and this is what I have
done so far: I switched on the GPS receiver, then went to Start >
Settings > Bluetooth. I switched the Bluetooth mode to "Discoverable"
and the GPS receiver showed up, so I added it as a bonded device. I put
in "0000" for the passkey, which is what Holux's FAQ's say to do (Q3):

http://www.holux.com.tw/Temp%20web/FAQ-(GPSlim236%20series).html

Now, this is where I'm a little confused, because I've done this so many
times that I can't remember exactly what I did the first time. I
*think* I just put in "0" the first time for the passkey and it said it
was wrong, so I went looking for what it should be, and found that Holux
said to enter "0000". I then entered that as the passkey and it
appeared to bond.

I booted up TomTom Mobile 5 and it still said that no GPS device was
present. At that point I went searching all over Google and I still
can't seem to find a solution. I've tried changing the passkey to
something different and now it doesn't seem to care. Possibly, this may
be because I've already entered the correct passkey once previously?

I also read a post found via Google that says that the outgoing COM port
must be set to 6 (instead of 7, apparently the default), however I can't
find a way to change this on my phone. The blue Bluetooth light on my
GPS receiver is supposed to flash once every 3 seconds if data is being
transferred, and if it is flashing once every second it means that the
receiver is either searching for Bluetooth devices or is in standby
mode. All I have ever seen is a flash every second. Does standby mode
mean that it may have bonded and/or communicated with my phone, but is
waiting for actual GPS data to be transferred?

I have checked the Holux instruction manual and website, but
unfortunately all their help seems to be for PDA users, not Smartphone
users :( Also, there is no data cord supplied with the receiver (it is
an optional extra), so I have no way of communicating with it directly
from my computer.

Any help would be much appreciated. I really don't know where else to
look!

Regards,

Ben

tomtom can be a bit moody with third party gps receivers. if you're
running windows mobile 2003SE then these are the settings I used to get
it working on an SPV C500.
* pair with the unit with passcode of 0000
* rename the pairing name from whatever the Holix default is, to "BTGPS
25773" (no quotes)
* under bluetooth settings, hit menu and "com ports". setup incoming
com port 6 and untick "secure connection"
* under tomtom, select "other GPS".

to test, when you start tomtom, you should see the flashing light on
your GPS unit change to indicate it's paired. if tomtom says "no gps
signal" it can see your GPS unit, it's just not getting a sat fix. if
it says "no gps device", it's not paired or setup correctly. my fuzion
unit has very quick flashes of the blue LED when turned on and not
paired, settling to once per second or so when paired - if you turn on
the GPS unit without a phone nearby you see the rapid blinking.

the main issue with tomtom is it seems to expect the pairing to have a
particular name: the one given above worked for me with a Fuzion 50 GPS
unit.

hope this helps,
ric

Hi Ric,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Unfortunately, I still couldn't get TomTom
to recognise the GPS receiver :(

I tried renaming the BT pairing to "BTGPS 25773" and "BTGPS25773"
(without quotes; it went to a new line on your post so I couldn't tell
if there was a space or not), but I can't see how to change the actual
BT settings in my phone.

If I go to Start > Settings > About, this is what I have:

Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone 2003
Version 4.20.0 (Build 13349)
Radio Version 1.12.01

The only changeable BT settings I can find on my phone are here: Start >
Configurations > BTSerialPortSetup. In this screen, all I have are two
checkboxes, labelled "Inbound COM port: COM6" and "Outbound COM port:
COM7". I assume this means that when the checkboxes are unchecked, the
COM port values can be anything. I cannot see any way to actually
change the COM port value. There is certainly nothing to do with a
secure connection or anything there.

Once I start TomTom it still says "No GPS Device" :( According to my
Holux manual, the blue light on the unit flashes once every 3 seconds
when data is being transferred (weird?) and once every second when it is
in standby mode or is looking for other BT devices. All I have ever
seen it do is flash once per second.

The main thing I'm worried about is spending all that money on a GPS
receiver that doesn't actually work! Do you know if my phone is
definitely compatible with this GPS receiver and this is just a
(fixable) software problem? Or is it likely to be a non-fixable
hardware problem requiring a new GPS receiver?

Thanks again for your help,

Ben

Tomtom Mobile 5 comes in a bundle with TomTom's BT GPS. Why don't you use
that or is this a 'moody' copy?

Hi benro2,

I am still using TT3 but I cannot be a major difference.
Go to the GPS button in TT. Apart from the first view, showing your position
and satelites, the is a tab GPS. On top you must enter the GPS device you are
using.
If it is not listed, choose NMEA 0183v2 Bluetooth.
Don't forget to check the bos in the upper left corner.
This should work... I hope.
Good luck.
Paul
