I am logged in as an administrator. I get no response when i try to add
hardware. No network connection, no usb, nothing external shows up. The
device manager is empty. I have a virus possibly, but to get any updates to
my antivirus spyware i need to go online, which i cannot with that computer.
I want to offload my data and reformat but my external hd is not getting
recognized. Please help

Do you have access to the internet on another machine that has a CD burner?

http://www.knoppix.org/

Click on the USA/British flag for English.
Click on Download for the ISO file.
You must have Nero or Roxon to burn the ISO image.

If you have internet access, burn a Knoppix ISO and boot from CD with Linux
Knoppix. Knoppix can access your NTFS hard drive and connect to external USB
drives.

Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Scroll down to
Plug and Play Service and stop and restart it.

It will populate the Device Manager again.
