Using Vista Home Premium. All sound devices (reorder and playback) set with
sound on and to max. volume.
Using Sound Recorder a file is created. I tried both the laptop builtin
microphone and an external plugin microphone. No sound from the saved file
(Microsoft Media Player).
What to do? Thanks.

Some things to check.
I have Windows XP so some things may be different in Vista.

Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices.

On the Volume tab check Place volume icon in the taskbar.
You might check Speaker settings, Speaker Volume (see that the sliders are
at about 3/4).

On the Audio tab check that your sound device (mine is an AC97) is selected.

Voice Tab Check that your sound device is selected, under Voice Recording
check that your sound device is selected. (Maybe Test Hardware).

Click OK.

Start > Control Panel > Sound Effect Manager.
Click the Speaker Configuration Button.
select 2CH Speaker, Make sure that UAJ automatic is NOT green (means it is
checked, you do not want it checked).
Look at the Back Panel configuration, Blue jack should be Line in, Green
Jack should be Line out and the Orange (red) Jack should be Mic in.

You may want to click the auto test button. You should hear sound from each
speaker (or headphone)

Close with the X in the upper right corner.

Double click the speaker icon on taskbar. Check that Mic is not muted and
the volume slider is not all the way down.
( Try your Mic, you should hear sound). You do not have to be recording to
hear the mic if it is working.

Double click the speaker icon on taskbar, options > Properties, Adjust
volume for (tick Recording), Ok. Check Select under Microphone.

Stereo Mix way work also.

Try your sound recorder again.
Good Luck!

I had a strange quirk, I had to re-install my sound drivers for my
Motherboard.
If none of the above works you might try re-installing your sound drivers.
