I know of a good freeware one for Pocket PC

http://www.qusnetsoft.ru/

(The newer version is shareware, but they still have the older version
available as freeware.)

I use it for a WM2003 Pocket PC. I don't know if it works in WM5. And I
don't think they have a smartphone version.

Just looked there. I don't see any newsgroup readers available for
smartphones. I see two available for pocket pcs, including the one I
mentioned.
