I don't get his....Am I being stupid?.....If you want to know if your
website is working, just type in the url of your website.....Or is that too
obvious?.....If you want to know if the server was down say, last Thursday,
just check your logs for last Thursday.....

Have I missed the point in a monumentally huge way?.....

Yes. The point is that the monitoring service notifies you when your
site goes down and then when it goes back up. I don't want to check
my site every 1/2 hour each day to see if it's up. I do want to know
if it's down for a sizeable amount of time. I use a free site
monitoring tool that checks every 20 minutes.

Oops - forgot to say that I don't want to know if it was down last
Thursday; I want to know if it's down *now*. If it's down for more
than a few minutes, I want to telephone my host to find out what's
wrong and when they expect it to be fixed.

Also, on occasion I haven't been able to reach my site but did not get
any notification that it was down. Each time, it's meant that the
problem lay with my ISP rather than my hosting company - useful info.
