Need working XP drivers for Gateway MT3421 downgrade. pwinggles 01-24-2008

A friend of mine recently downgraded his Gateway MT3421 to XP
Professional from Vista Home, and didn't consider the possibility that
Gateway is never any help with anything useful, so alas, it is my task
to find appropriate XP drivers. I have tried the "pick a random MT
model and hope XP is native on it" approach, and have not had any luck.
I have heard that this information is in abundance in some forum
somewhere, but I can't seem to find that as well. Any help on this
would be fantastic as this is a time-sensitive issue. Again, all I am
looking for are some leads (or straight up answers!) as to which model
has appropriate XP drivers that will function properly on his Gateway
MT3421.

Thanks,
Pwing

I wouldn't think of changing the OS or reformatting and installing the
same without pulling off the original drivers first. You can use the
free DriverBackup to do this. Many of Windows 2000, XP, and Vista
drivers are the same.

Bill, this is good advice and the OP would probably have done what you
suggest, given the chance. But now, he needs to get this machine back to
work with XP.

I suggest to the OP a three pronged approach which helped me do that
"upgrade" (in my view) a few weeks ago.

1/ Use Everest or Aida (free, but replaced by Everest, which is not) to
identify the hardware and get some useful links for drivers.

2/ visit www.driveragent.com. Ok, it is not free, but even if it is not
100% reliable (it may tell you some drivers which perfectly work need to
be updated; don't do it unless you have a good reason to!), the drivers
it will help you find make it worth the money.

3/ Use the utility DriverGenius. Not free either, but again, same
reasoning as with driveragent.com

Be careful to correctly identify the driver files you will download and
which ones you install, it is very easy to lose track of what has been
done, what works, what does not.

Making a backup of all registry configurations which appear to work is
also a good idea.

Good luck.

True, but it might be possible to restore the OEM Vista just to pull off
the drivers.

I also use DriverGenius and DriverBackup does the same thing except it
is free.

I do not know Driverbackup, but DriverGenius, besides backing up
drivers, helps find the ones that are missing or need updating. Does
Driverbackup do this too?
