I normally access my work computer and Terminal Server by firing up a VPN
connection then RDP. I need some advice on getting a pocket sized device to
RDP via VPN anywhere that Verizon offer's data coverage.

Additional Preferences:

1. Reasonable resolution but I will take what I can get - Think I have seen
screens 480x640.
2. Would be nice to have phone built in.
3. Would be great if I could somehow connect my laptop to it to use the
Internet connection as well.

vpn/terminal server should work with most data connections including
cellular although verizons is cdma which is not the best.

I suggest posting your router info including port numbers so that others
can comment on vpn tunneling through your specific box(es)

Most pocketpc's a QVGA (240x320) but with those that are VGA, the
physical size will limit the advantage. A lot of IT people have been
using terminal server on qvga ppc's for several years running... ask
about your specific concerns. (hot tip, RUN OSK on the host computer to
address your next question ;-)

Smartphones have limited input options compared to the ppc, so would
strongly recommend ppc for that reason... and recommend one with a built
in thumb keyboard.

The VPN connection is standard Windows 2003 RRAS server so anything that can
connect to that should be fine. I believe we are setup for both PPTP and
L2TP so 1723 and 47 as well as 1701 and 500.

I don't mind a little larger size on the device just as long as I can put it
in my pocket. I could use it for email, however I might not since I don't
get emergency emails. I get emergency phone calls. I just need it as a
remote management device to connect to my XP desktop or Windows servers when
it is not feasible to bring my laptop.

Bonuses I would like to have
1. A QWERTY keyboard would be a real plus since I sometimes have to do
something from the command line on the remote machine.
2. I would prefer to use this to replace my phone as well, but if I can get
a screen with higher resolution I would forgo the integtrated phone option.
3. 802.1x wireless would be nice for when I am in the office and working on
something away from my desk.

I think you will find slight (in dimensions) differences in screens, but
you are going to have to embrace the fact that any mobile screen is
going to be a restriction. Additionally, that need effectively removes
the smartphone from consideration.

All devices with built in keyboards are qwerty but they are all also
significantly different layouts... i.e. using <Fn> for punctuation, lack
of <Ctrl> and <Alt> keys, etc. Built in keypads are also not going to
be "touch typable" but rather using the thumbs or one finger of each
hand... for this need, factor in a good bluetooth folding keyboard which
you can pull out when needed.

Resolution is going to depend on your eyes and magnification... the
physical sizes are similar... with my eyes, magnification is essential
to exploit vga screens. No phone, suggest looking at Dell's options.

Wifi is in most PPC's nowadays... both those with and without phones.
