Hi.
I'm looking at 17" laptops/desktop replacements and could use
advice/comments. I've looked into the following:
Toshiba M65-S8092
Toshiba M60-BK3
Gateway NX850XL
Dell XPS M170
Sony VGN-AX580G
Fujitsu N6220-601
I don't care about the fastest 3D games. I need internet, programming,
photo and video editing, and music composition/soft-synths, and some
mid-level gaming. The main things I want are high screen resolutions,
CPU speed, and quiet operation (at least at idle/low usage). Battery
life and weight aren't a big deal. Would the systems with shared
video RAM have disadvantages for what I want?
All but the Gateway and the Dell are 1440x900 displays, which is too
low for my use. Unfortunately, the Dell and the Gateway aren't sold in
store (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'd have to buy them sight-unseen.
Therefore, I'd appreciate any info and comparisons people might have.
I had a Gateway 9300CX for about five years and it was still going
strong when I sold it, but I have no idea if the current Gateways are
any good, and the Gateway 'stores' all closed last year.
Thanks,
David

I have a toshiba P30 that I bought just a few months ago.
From a style standpoint, I wish I had gotten an ultra mobile and a desktop.
I thought I could use the mobile desktop to do everything - turns out its
too big to be portable. I can do a lateral raise with a $25 dumb bell,
but not with this computer in its case. The corners of the case hit me in
the knees as I carry it and I pulled a rib muscle just sliding it ( in its
case )around in my car. Maybe I'm just out of shape.
I wanted to do some 3D modeling in blender, but the video card (and I got
the one with the discrete memory, not shared) didn't work well with it.
Photoshop works well.
If you can get NVIDIA graphics card, get it, cause last time I looked, ATI's
OPENGL driver isn't working with things Like BLENDER.org...
Perhaps you should consider a wireless mouse and keyboard, a usb hub, and a
long cord for your monitor, and just get a desktop if you just want to sit
on your couch to use it.
I looked into the area51M from alienware, but saw a few too many bad reviews
of them welching on support - just hearsay.
Toshiba got all the best reviews for support when I checked.
3D Games (Quake 4) worked only in the lowest graphics settings - but it
worked well as far as networking.
Photoshop works well with my toshiba, and one of the best features is the
physical volume knob ( not software dependant ). YOu can just turn it down
if it's making noise, you don't have to wait for a software call from the
keyboard driver or anything.
I suggest getting bluetooth if this is any kind of investment - it's the
handiest way to tether your treo650 palm phone.
(I got one of those by calling verizon for $250, got the unlimited data plan
with 450 minutes voice for what, on my bill, is just $55 a month. Then
download "PDANet" and pay $30 and get unlimited internet access. through
your pdaphone (mine is faster than dialup and in one of their undeveloped
network areas).
Put that in your pipe and smoke it...

You have many choices....but
I prefer the Sony as I had their 17 inch unit..
http://vaio-online.sony.com/prod_info/vgn-a59gp/specifications.html
One thing that surprises me with the unit you mentioned is its slow....
the CPU is just pentium 760 not the latest 780 with the 2.26 Ghz speed
which mine had.
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/details/561999058 ..Being preloaded with Adobe Photoshop, Premiere and proprietary Sony
based audio and video software and hardware it provided me with good
usefulness and enjoyment. for my needs...
Indeed its expensive that is the major disadvantage...but for me its
worth it...
Some People may complain about poor technical support but it did not
happened to me ever since I got my unit....Am I just lucky..?

I thought Sony made a laptop with 1920 x 1200! This doesn't show up on
Sony's website (other than your direct link). Is it not sold in the
US?

I'm confused: this link just goes to the VGN-AX580G. Do you have a
link for someone selling the A59GP in the US?
Thanks,
David

The only notebook that comes close to the chip set is this

But the A59 GP I can't find it here..either...
