I can google too:_ ...but it doesn't really help me to know what's
good and what's not. That's why I am looking for recommendations here.

Don't take me bad, but you should read "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way"
by Eric Steven Raymond, here:

In other words: if you seek personal recomendations, please say so. If your
client has special needs ("Excel! At one click!") Your first question was
very, very generic.

For the question at hand: Personally, I'd stick with .csv files. As I use
OpenOffice and I'm not tied to any macro-ridden excel-based workflow, they
perform quite well for my needs.

I understand. I already suggested that to the client. He wants pure
Excel format, so I need to find another solution.

Thanks,

There's a Pear package:

http://pear.php.net/package/Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer

It's not finished and it's probably abandoned like many other Pear
packages; but it generates native Excel files (there're many libraries
out there that merely generate HTML and disguise it with an *.xls
extension) and it should be enough for basic usage.

I have an excel class that I downloaded from somewhere and modified to
my own tastes.  It is limited to being able to put up only one block of
data, with a header row and a title row.  If you email me at

sheldon AT slgdev DOT com

I will send it to you.  When run, it asks the user whether they want to
open or save the Excel file (so long as they don't have browser settings
set to open in html -- the IE default).
