My Videos no longer works with MPEG 2 files Nigel Pitcher 01-07-2006

I have a library of MPEG2 files generated by recording TV shows using
Showshifter(sorry!) with a Hauppauge WINTV card on another (networked)
Windows XP machine. Up until 10 days ago, I could watch the recordings fine
across the network on my MCE machine using MCE2005 and the "My Videos"
function. They all fail now.

However, they all continue to work fine on the MCE machine in WMP10, in
Intervideo WINDVD 7 and in RealPlayer. The network is not at fault. I have
the same problems below if I copy the files onto the MCE machine.

When I try to play any of them inside MCE from the My Videos menu, the
following sequence of events happens.

1. About 10 seconds after pressing "play", presumably after the codecs have
attempted to open the file, an onscreen dialogue appears for about 5 seconds,
. It is the same dialogue that you would normally expect to see at the end of
a video. It proclaims "Finshed" and offers "Restart, Delete and Done" as 3
options.
2. Without user intervention, the screen then goes black for a further 10
seconds (CODEC retry?) and then goes back to the "Finished" dialogue. This
happens 3 times. Then...
3. In a blue screen, the message "Cannot Play Video. Media Center
encountered an unknown error" appears.

There is no further diagnostic info in any of the logs maintained in the
Event Viewer.

From this newsgroup and others (including Green Button) I see I am not
alone, but no-one yet seems to have found a cure.

Any help/advice much appreciated!

Nigel
