Moto Q - Do I need to close open applications? Alex 09-28-2007

Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a Moto Q, and it's NICE! One question though, it
seems everytime I open an application it continues running and is
listed on the Home Screen. Do these need to be closed? When i start
hitting the Back button (left arrow) it keeps going back though all
the apps I've opened, but are these still running?

Just curious because trying to do whatever I can to save battery life.

Actually the apps on the home screen aren't open apps, but recently used
apps. You will notice that even if you go to a task manager, and close all
open apps, those things on the home screen don't go away.

But, things you open do stay open, and sort of running in the background. By
sort of I mean an application that is open, and not doing anything is not
consuming any CPU cycles and really not hurting you. The OS is designed to
dynamically allocate memory and close little used applications, cleanly,
(i.e. not lose data), if it runs short of memory to run a new task. The
idea behind that philosophy is that apps you use a lot, stay in memory, so
they don't take as long to open when you do call on them again. The jury is
out as to how well MS has achieved that goal. Over years of personal
experience, which doesn't mean it is everyone's experience, I have found
this works much better on SmartPhones than PPCs. I do frequently see my PPCs
slowing down, and having a soft reset or forcing programs to close helping
that shortage of memory issue. I find it less necessary on Smartphones.

So, yes the programs are likely still running, but they probably aren't
contributing significantly to battery usage, if they aren't being actively
used. A caveat to that is a program like a navigation program that is still
calculating your route, or processing a GPS when it is in the background, or
media player that is still running tunes or videos in the background.

set your 8 / x key speed dial to open the task manager, so it is easy
to kill all or, kill al but selected apps.

i've noticed that sometimes if i have a lot of applications running,
the speed dial will not initiate and i have to go through the menu
system to start task manager.
