Memory advice please JKO 07-21-2005

I've just ordered a base-model Dell Inspiron 6000 and I plan on buying
memory for an upgrade. This machine supports dual-channel memory
architecture and will be running XP Home. Obviously best performance
would be if I ripped out the 256M it comes with and stuck in 2x512M -
however, that is *not* an option I can afford. So, would I be better
sticking in another 256M and using the dual-channel feature, or sticking
in 512M and getting the benefit of extra memory (bearing in mind that
it's shared video memory).

Thanks,
John

Why buy the dual channel capability and not use it? If you were going to do
that, you could have saved some money and just purchased one of the cheaper
Inspirons.

Actually, it's on special offer and there is no cheaper inspiron model.
Anyway, the dual-channel capability wasn't a factor in my choice - it
only became an issue when I started looking for a memory upgrade and I
realised that it had that facility.

So, some advice in reply to the question would be nice rather than a
criticism of my choice of machine.

Ok. Again, why buy the technology and not use it? My advice would be to
take advantage of the dual channel architecture.

Dell (USA) offers the Inspiron 2200 for $637 and the 1200 for $545, both
cheaper than the 6000.

Thanks Kevin,
System was ordered from Dell UK and both of those others are now more
expensive (2200,1200 - same price - £479) than the 6000 (£441, with a
free Dell 720 printer as well).

But I shall probably make use of the dual-channel memory feature as you
suggest.
