Hi,

I just got a new Dell XPS 720 and need some assurance about what I got for
an OS.

My invoice says "Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005, English"

I ran a dxdiag and I got "Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service
Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300)"

Windows splash screen at start-up just says XP (not Pro or MCE)

General tab of System Folder says Media Centre Edition Version 2002 Service
pack 2.

I do have a Media Centre shortcut on my desk top and the version under the
settings tab tells me its Edition 2005 Version 5.1.2715
(xpsp(wmbla).051215-1116) Update Rollup 2.

So what's my operating system? Is it XP Pro or MCE? Why does the General tab
in my System folder not say 2005? Should the splash screen have something
more than just XP?

Thanks for your help.

Everything you described is normal. The core of XP Media Center is XP Pro.

So why does the General Tab of the system folder say its MCE Version 2002
when I have 2005?

That's the wrong place to look if you want the version of Media Center (i.e
the system control panel).
Version 2002 describes the Windows Version, (and not the Media Center
version)

The right place to see the version of Media Center is described here

How to determine the version of Media Center that you are running
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837707

I hope you aren't trying to find some solution to make the 2002 in the
System Control Panel become something else, because the way it is shown is
by design. You'd simply be wasting your time trying to fix something that
is being shown as intended.
