That is probably a good maximum size for an image, unless your site is a
photo gallery and you are giving away hi-res photos. (Note: image size,
not page width.)

Screen resolution is unimportant. Mine is 22" (1680px) wide. Do I have a
maximized browser window? No. Not hardly ever. I usually have at least
two windows of various types open side-by-side.

The W3C doesn't care a whit how wide your web pages are. A lot of us
developers/webmasters do though, and in this century, fixed width is
out. Think flexible.
