In reading about the financial blows now buffeting next years mega-
rover launch, it seems to me that perhaps this mission could now be
entirely unnecessary. With all the reams of data now provided by the
two smaller rovers, along with info from the Phoenix Station, is any
more hard evidence truly required? Enough to justify yet another
digger on the Red Planet?

Perhaps the currently chosen location for its landing actually
nullifies the possibility of it finding anything new. If it were sent
into the Hellas Basin, might it not have the advantage of peering back
more deeply in time? If the very nexus of the Valles Marineris were
its destination -- within striking range of Olympus and its labyrinth
-- couldn't great discoveries then be anticipated for an atomic SUV
robot?

But, as far as I know, neither location is considered a priority for
such a muscular remote explorer.

So where are they actually planning to land this already-obsolete
device?

You could look it up.

That's a non-binding, preference-gathering vote. See previous blog
entries over several days for details of the candidate sites.

It looks like All Systems are Go, for either Eberswalde, Holden or
Gale.

Not sure where those are, but they don't sound much to me like Noctis
Labyrinthis or the Cliffs of Hellas, my own top choices.
