Does anyone know what D_MAPINFO is? I know it is a datum that MapInfo
uses, but does anyone have any information on it. Is in a proprietary
datum? I have not found any information on it on the MapInfo web site. It
is the datum that ArcMap says a shapefile is in after a MapInfo layer, with
an unspecified datum, is converted to a shape file using the universal
translator. This is from MapInfo Professional 8..I think...

Thanks Travis

Information from ESRI shape file:

Geometry Type: Polygon
Geographic Coordinate System: Lat Long for MAPINFO type 0 Datum
Datum: D_MAPINFO
Prime Meridian: 0
Angular Unit: Degree

It is similar to a SHP file without PRJ file, but at least you know it is
geographic coordinates (latitude / longitude). The Spheroid is unknown.

If you need to overlay it with other data, you should go back to the source
and try to find out the real coordinate system.

Uffe

Doesn't MapInfo need to know the datum in order to display the layer.
Plus, one of the layouts in MapInfo that I have has a UTM layer in it, and
it doen't seem to have a problem. Wouldn't that mean that MapInfo knows
what datum it is, or at least applies a default datum to it, to either
convert the UTM layer to lat/long or to convert the lat/long layer to UTM.

It assumes WGS84 as datum. Doesn't have to be correct, though.
