Microsoft Windows Live Messenger (MSN) now has some AI virtual
characters for people to chat with. Including "Alfred".

Children chat to "Alfred", and are encouraged to visit his "space" at
Microsoft Live, where they naively leave comments. These comments are
accompanied by the childrens' email addresses which paedophiles are
harvesting in order to contact children through MSN.

I know. It happened to my daughter and, I subsequently found, several
of her friends.

Now if my daughter signs into MSN, she is inundated with strangers
attempting to chat with her. All innocent children? I very much doubt
it.

Quite how Microsoft could be so bloody stupid escapes me.

Anyway, I felt the need to advise other parents.

Matt

Sheesh. Sorry to hear that, Matt. But I guess it doesn't surprise me.
Pedophiles look for any way they can to find kids. And unfortunately,
there's no way to really verify this is a kid - you can't exactly ask
him/her for a credit card number, for instance.

I'm sure MSN is doing what they can, just like Facebook, YouTube, and so
on are. But it's like trying to stay ahead of the virus writers. You
just can't do it.

He's right. Even the Catholic Church couldn't do it; and they are
bigger than Microsoft . . . at least I think they are. BRB gotta
check in Wikipedia to see if the Catholic Church is bigger than
Microsoft.

I bet the Pope could release a better program than Office 2007 . . .

And this is where a parent should do their JOB. PARENTING.
If you think or know something is unsafe then do not let your kids do it or
be there to supervise.

Any parent that lets their children online without adult supervision is not
doing their job.

No I am not attacking Matt or calling him a bad parent. He caught this and I
would hope he is now making sure his daughter does the right thing. This is
just a general point I wish to make. Parents no-a-days seem to think
everyone BUT them should be raising their kids.

Your sentiments are good, however I should venture naive. It is
neither realistic nor constructive to monitor a child constantly when
they are using the Internet.

The issue I was raising was of the stupid devices MSN employs which
both encourage a lack of security and attract predators.

Compare it with Club penguin, which is a (pretty) safe, moderated
environment and one I have no problem with.
