I have a ESRI geodatabase which sits on a networked server.
I have split this database into a front and back end. (The back end
being the geodatabase that sits on server)
The front end sits on peoples local machines, and contains a locked
down form (some fields can be edited) and some simple queries and
reports.
I also have an MXD project that has some simple tools I created to
allow users to add data to the geodatabase (simple one points layer,
which users add points to map, add links to photos, few drop-downs,
nothing special).
This MXD project links to the same geodatase backend on the server.
Heres a picture that may give a slightly better idea of what im on
about:

Now, I know this isnt ideal and probably sounds quite dangerous (in
terms of corruption from multi-user edits). I dont want suggestions
of going down the ArcSDE or Server route as that is not an option with
the client.
However, has anyone experience with this sort of set up?
Users with and ArcGIS license will be able to open the mxd, add data
into the map, etc.
Other users without ArcGIS will be able to use the Access front end to
view the data in the geodatabase and (possibly) edit some of the
fields that are in the geodatabase.
Now ive done some very crude testing with this and it all appears to
work ok --> With both the front-end open and the mxd open, I can make
edits in either and they are reflected in the other.
I have heard that creating primary keys in Access will cock everything
up in ArcGIS, so leaving that alone, and I know I will need to lock
down the forms and create validation rules to prevent users corrupting
the geodatabase.
Like i said, id be interested to hear your thoughts on this structure,
is it a bad idea? have you done anything similar with good reults?
Thanks in advance.
