 Usually i'll put any mp3's i want to use as ring tones on my storage card
somewhere. Then tap & hold > Set as ringtone.

what about adding extra sounds for notifications, such as txt or email
arrival etc..?

Not something i usually use, however by putting the file in \Windows (in "My
Device") it should appear in sounds and notifications settings. From memory
they have to be wave or midi files to be used as notifications though...
