Hi,
I have a audiovox ppc-6600. For some reason, the battery died completely
(although I recharge it daily). Anyway, I plugged it back in to the cradle
expecting all my settings, files, etc to be restored as I was used to with my
Palm. Alas, that is not to be. Only tasks, contact etc. All settings, gone!
all files ( excel etc) gone! all programs gone!
Is there anything to recover those? I realized now that there is a backup I
have to setup but with my Palm this was all automatic...
After all, everytime i loose batter power by mistake I have to reconfigure
all settings?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

No, there is no "automatic" backup.
_If_ you used activesync to sync your pim data and files, those should
be recoverable by simply re-establishing your partnership with
activesync and re-syncing... caution, would suggest backing up those
items on your desktop before doing so.
Most ppc's ship with a backup program in rom on on the companion cd,
but, it's up to you to set it up and run it regularly... note, backup to
memory card is normally the best option as you can be back up and
running in a matter of a few minutes far from your desktop.

Please log in for more thread options I'm sorry about that.
Yes, there's no automatic back up on PPC just like there's no automatic back
up on PC.
You can back up stuff (including settings) via AS or you could use backup
utility on PPC to save stuff on to flash card.
WM 5.0 stores everything in flash anyway so it's immune to power loss.
If you're synchronizing with outlook, you could just establish partnership
and get all PIM data back.
Applications installed via AS should be easy to restore as well via AS's
Add/Remove programs option.
Files you have on PPC only are gone.

Yes, but, there are a number of 3rd party apps for the desktop (like
Microsoft OneCare-beta). And, for pre-Windows Mobile 5 devices like the
Audiovox 6600, ActiveSync can perform manual and automatic backups. But,
this does need to be selected as an option. NOTE TO OTHERS: Even though this
is the Smartphone newsgroup and Smartphone's never had an ActiveSync backup
option, the Audiovox 660 is a Pocket PC Phone Edition (the question is in
the wrong newsgroup :-).

PIM data is synched, but settings are not. So, for example, calendar and
contacts can be restored by rebuilding a partnership. But, POP3/IMAP4 email
settings will not be restored.

Yes, but the 6600 is a Windows 2003 Second Edition device.

But, it can be a giant pain if there are a lot of registration numbers that
need to be reapplied for many individual applications.
