I'm a telecom/data professional who does some on-site work for clients.
Most of my time these days is spent IN the office, unfortunately, but I do
go out about once a week. For 4 years I used a Toshiba Satellite laptop
that I really liked (for some reason I cannot recall the exact model). The
only thing I did not like about it was how hot the 1.7ghz P4 cpu ran. The
bottom of the laptop got very hot within 20 minutes. But it ran good and
was built pretty well. I never had a problem with it. For what it's worth,
I treated it very gently, always keeping it in a case and handling it
carefully.

Anyway, I had to give that computer up, and I'm responsible for buying my
replacement. My needs are pretty basic. I don't have to have any super
performance. What I need most is durability, decent portability, and good
battery life - and I would like for it to run cooler than my Toshiba. I do
not want to spend a lot of money, perhaps $1200 max. I was always impressed
with the Thinkpads used by many of the techs I worked with, so I've
considered purchasing a slightly older model Thinkpad - perhaps P3 in good
condition. For about $400-$600 I can get what looks like a pretty good
older model Thinkpad - Windows XP, +/- 1.0ghz cpu, 512mb RAM, 40gb hard
drive, power supply, working battery and a warranty. Those specs are okay
for my needs.

I am a bit skeptical about new laptops in the sub-$100 range, so it seems
like an older well-built laptop may be a better option for me than a newer
"budget" laptop. Can anyone speak to that from direct experience?

Thank you,

JM

Bear in mind that a Thinkpad R can be obtained new direct from Lenovo for
under $1000.

$400 to $600 is a bit high for any P3.

You can get a new budget laptop for $500-$600 (on sale with rebates).
You can get a quite good mid-to-high end laptop for $1,200 (even for
$995 with careful shopping, and sometimes, occasionally, for $700-$800).

I'd look for a "Centrino" system. Although you say that the lower
performance units would be ok, my guess is that you wouldn't be happy
with them for very long.
