Please log in for more thread options $400 to $600 is a bit high for any P3.
You can get a new budget laptop for $500-$600 (on sale with rebates).
You can get a quite good mid-to-high end laptop for $1,200 (even for
$995 with careful shopping, and sometimes, occasionally, for $700-$800).
I'd look for a "Centrino" system. Although you say that the lower
performance units would be ok, my guess is that you wouldn't be happy
with them for very long.
