I use Desktop Search and it indexes and searches for me, however I do
not use Windows Explorer as my shell, so this means that the Deskbar
is not available.

If I want to search I right click the Search icon in the System Tray
and select Search Now which opens the Desktop Search Window where I
can enter my search requirements.

Is there a way of launching this window programmatically (like a
shortcut)?

Is there a way of running the Deskbar "undocked" from the Task Bar, or
calling the Desktop shortcut handler programmatically?
