Can I use the image program on my desktop to back up my laptop. They are

that would work if you want to backup your DATA only ? ( not image the
laptop disk drive)

Please log in for more thread options BTW what is " image program on my desktop "
If Norton Ghost, make a bootable floppy for the laptop.
you'll need to load network drivers and assign an ip address then boo
the floppy ( NOT WINDOWS) and use a crossover cable

Not with any imaging utility program that I know of. Imaging software
generally needs lower level access to the hard disk than that provided
by a network share.
What you /can/ do is to run a suitable utility on your /laptop/ that
will backup your laptop into one or more files on your desktop. The
utility then has the lower level access to the laptop dirve that it
needs - it only needs network share access to the desktop in order to
write file(s) to it.

Depending on the program - yes, you can, and yes, the target drive
would need to be shared. I use Acronis True Image, and that's how it
works - dunno about what you've got.
I image a laptop to 2 different locations - a standalone network drive
and a shared drive on another PC. Generally, if you can see the hard
drive from your laptop, you can image to it with True Image under
Windows.
Restoring can be another matter, as the TI Linux boot recovery disk
has its own set of drivers, and not everything you can see under
Windows is there with the boot disk. For instance, there's no
wireless support, but my experience is that imaging over wireless is a
tedious and error-prone procedure.
The few times I've had trouble with that, I just copy the images to an
external HD, plug that into the laptop, and it's back up and running
within 20 minutes. I also limit my image file sizes to 700mb so I
could restore from a pile of CDs or DVDs if all else failed, but that
hasn't been necessary yet.
You should always test your restore procedure before you need it to
avoid unpleasant surprises.
If you're not using True Image, it may be worth checking out the demo
version at www.acronis.com. I've had excellent luck with it, and it's
far better than any other imaging software I've tried. Ghost was a
disaster for me, but some people have good luck with it.
