What is the latest in this regard? Had a Toshiba M70 SR3
stolen about a year and a half ago. (Only a few months old) I was
advised by Toshiba that if I had ever had it scanned by them, such as
would have been the case had I experienced problems with it and had
reason to hook up with their facilities, they would have had a record
of the chip number and it could be tracked when on the internet.
Unfortunately I was not aware at the time that software was
available to do just that. At added cost to me, of course.
No cross record apparently exists between the serial number and
the chip number when they are manufactured.Good deal for the retailers
I guess but not the theft victim.
I wondered if internet or email tracked any of this in order
to identify individual computers. It has been suggested to me that
Toshiba has some sort of stolen laptop record they keep if one reports
the theft to them.
As an observation, is it not about time that we, the
consumers, demanded that the manufacturers provide tracking capability
built in and provided to the purchaser?

That hit the fan before. Do you want every government agency even local
police departments tracking you on line. Every crook with a computer could
track you....

The NSA (US Government) already tracks everything you do right now
Woody. Even without a court order. :(
