It probably *is* doing it at home, but it may not be set up the same way
such that it's obvious that it's happening. Windows Mobile 5 devices come
from the factory set up to act like RNDIS network adapters so plugging in
your device is like plugging in a USB Ethernet adapter to the PC. The new
adapter, which follows the RNDIS specification, is handled by a special
RNDIS driver on the PC. Once it's recognized and the driver is loaded, the
PC asks for an IP address, which the mobile device provides. Since the
mobile device also has an address on the same network subnet, the two can
now communicate over the network. This is where lots of people have
problems, as this is essentially a real network connection as far as the PC
is concerned, so any firewall software running on the PC can, and often
does, block the communications between the two devices. The ActiveSync
installer trys to add exceptions to the firewalls that it knows about, but,
if you have an older firewall version, you have set the firewall not to
allow exceptions, or you use a firewall that AS doesn't know about, you'll
get what you see: the network device appears, but AS doesn't know that
there's a device to talk to because no network "wake-up" messages are
passed. Virtual Private Networking clients on the PC may also restrict
other network adapters (as a means of keeping the PC from forwarding secure
data from the VPN to some random network that the VPN client doesn't know
about).
That's where I'd start looking: firewall, VPN client and, the usual, virus
and spyware blockers.
